Lot 2047
Great Britain. Noble, Nd. S.1502; Fr-95. Edward III, 1327-1377. London mint. Treaty period. King stands facing in ship, bearing sword and shield. Reverse Floriated cross with lis at ends, large E in center. Crisply struck and slightly oval with lots of original luster. Planchet Flaw. Bright, glistening surfaces. About Uncirculated.

**Although Edward became King in 1327 he did not assume the government of the realm until 1330. He later laid claim to the throne of France, through his mother, and so began the Hundred Years War. During the first stages of the Hundred Years War English victories included the Battle of Crecy 1346, and the capture of Calais in 1347. Edward surrendered his claim to the French throne in 1360, but the war resumed in 1369. A mint was opened in Calais in 1363 for the production of gold and silver coins of English type, and these coins are generally somewhat scarcer than those produced in London.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Lot 2048
Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1518; Fr-98. Edward III, 1327-1377. Fourth coinage (1351-77) post treaty period (1369-77). London mint. Obverse: King standing facing in ship bearing sword and shield. Reverse floriated cross with lis at ends. E and pellet in center. This rarer variety Noble glistens with original luster and is beautifully centered on a very round flan. The small cameo portrait is incredibly detailed and the design and letters are crisp and sharply struck. NGC graded MS-63.

*Although a relatively popular and successful King, in terms of foreign conquest and domestic stability, the later years of Edward's reign (when this coin was made) were marked by military failure and growing discontent at home. History has however marked Edward III, who reigned for half a century, as on of England's greatest monarchs.

Lot 2051
Great Britain. Noble, Nd. S.1744/46; North-1373. Series E/F. Henry V, 1413-1422. Obverse: King stands facing in ship, bearing sword and shield. Cinquefoil and annulet to left and right of king's wrist. Pellet at sword point. Trefoil by shield, trefoil on side of ship. Reverse Floriated cross.
The portrait is sharper than we have seen on any Henry V Noble. Gold coins produced during this brief reign are now rare, and there were no Henry V gold pieces represented in the Millennia Collection. This is without doubt an exceptional specimen, crisply made and with its original frosty mint luster intact. Struck on an excellent flan. Extremely rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-65.

**Henry V was a 'warrior king' and one of England's more celebrated monarchs. The son of Henry IV, he invaded Normandy in 1415 and defeated the French at the Battle of Agincourt. He invaded again in 1417-1419, capturing Rouen. His military victory forced the French into the Treaty of Troys 1420 which gave Henry control of the French government. He married Catherine of Valois in 1420 and gained recognition as heir to the French throne by his father-in-law Charles VI, but died before him. He was succeeded by his son Henry VI.

Great Britain. Noble, Nd. S.1799; Fr-112. Henry VI, First reign, 1422-1461. Annulet issue. Obverse: King stands in ship facing, bearing sword and shield, annulet by base of sword arm. Reverse Floriated cross with lis at ends, h in center, annulet in first spandrel. A fully round coin well made and with a remarkably clear portrait. NGC graded MS-62.

* Henry VI was the son of Henry V. He succeeded to the English throne on the death of his father in August 1422 at the tender age of 9 months old. His mother, Catherine of Valois, the daughter of King Charles VI of France, was only aged 20. She was viewed with extreme suspicion, and was excluded from significant influence over the young king's upbringing. England was effectively ruled by a regency council until Henry came of age. He assumed royal power in 1442, but, as an indecisive yet deeply spiritual man, he showed little appetite for war. As a result of his successes in the Hundred Years War, Henry V had left his son considerable territories in France, but Henry VI yearned for peace with France and was persuaded that one way to achieve this objective was to marry Charles VII's niece, Margaret of Anjou. The marriage took place in 1445 and Margaret soon proved a tougher and more adept leader than her husband.
The annulet issue gold coins of Henry VI were struck early in the reign (in the 1420's) but after 1426 the supply of gold began to dwindle and gold coins made after this date are especially rare. By 1450 Henry had lost most of the French territory won by his forbears, and he was faced by squabbling and disaffection among the leading nobles at home. By 1453 Henry suffered a severe mental breakdown, and the rest of his life was marked by an inability to cop with the responsibility thrust upon him at birth. In many ways he was simply a puppet for the stronger characters around him. He was deposed and imprisoned in 1461, but later (in 1470) was again installed as King. He was murdered in 1471.
